Where is the U.S. Dollar going? Jan. 22/08

Where is the Bernanke (U.S. Dollar) going? It would appear that, for the first time in 18 years, the U.S. is headed for the end of the consumption cycle. This could be bad news for the greenback, even given the fact that foreign investors may see Treasuries as a safe haven in these troubled times.
The U.S. dollar is already in trouble - witness the current account deficit, slowing growth, returns lower than expected by foreign investors, and a slow shift in preference away from U.S.-dollar-based assets on the part of Asian central banks. Of course, once the U.S. economy gets its legs back, the U.S. dollar would stand a better chance of gaining some strength.
